Est-ce que votre entreprise est conforme à la Loi sur la Conception sans obstacles pour les Personnes avec Incapacité Auditive selon la Loi concernant l’Accessibilité pour les Personnes souffrants d’un Handicap en l’Ontario (LAPHO)?

Différentes technologies de communication en temps réel (audio, vidéo, contenu, tableau blanc interactif), peuvent être combinées de façon unique pour répondre à chaque situation de collaboration. Une session de collaboration est comme une toupie faite d’un peu de chacune de ces quatre technologies variables. Les sommets peuvent être de différentes formes et tailles, chacun convient aux besoins des participants à la réunion de collaboration, mais le point de la partie supérieur est toujours la technologie audio. Si il n’y a pas de son, il n’y a aucune session de collaboration en temps réel – le sommet ne tourne pas.

La technologie audio est souvent prise pour acquis. Même si elle est la plus fondamentale des technologies de conférence, elle est celle dont on s’occupe de moins. La technologie audio a été compromise depuis la technologie du téléphone mobile et est devenue omniprésente et plus répandue que les lignes fixes. Pourquoi? Parce qu’un appel téléphonique mobile se retrouve compressé dans un appel à seulement 8kbps.

Un fichier de musique numérique compressé à 128 kbps à plutôt un bon son, cependant, à 64 kbps la fidélité tombe de manière significative et une chanson à 32 kbps ne vaut pratiquement pas la peine d’être écoutée. Un appel vocal à 8kbps, celui auquel les gens se sont habitués, ne fournit pas une bonne qualité audio.

Pourquoi acceptons-nous une telle qualité audio inférieure? Pour la commodité que le téléphone mobile nous donne. Nous sacrifions beaucoup la qualité audio pour la commodité du mobile, mais disposer d’une bonne qualité audio dans une conférence téléphonique est fondamental. C’est souvent la différence entre la communication et la non communication.

Vous pouvez obtenir la bonne technologie pour rendre la partie audio de votre conférence meilleure, pour que les gens puissent entendre ce qui est dit plus correctement – une meilleure communication.

Incapacité Auditive

listentech-theater_42Notre monde peut être difficile pour les personnes malentendantes. Selon la Société canadienne de l’ouïe, la perte d’audition est de plus en plus répandue:

  • Près d’1 adulte Canadien sur 4 rapporte avoir une perte auditive
  • La perte d’audition est la troisième maladie chronique la plus répandue chez les personnes âgées et le handicap le plus répandu. Sa fréquence augmente avec l’âge – 46% des personnes âgées de 45 à 87ans ont une perte auditive
  • Le vieillissement est la cause première de la perte auditive, l’incidence de cette perte auditive est en train de monter en flèche avec le vieillissement de la population

Vous pouvez obtenir la bonne technologie pour rendre la partie audio de votre réunion meilleure, permettant ainsi aux personnes malentendantes d’écouter correctement ce qui est dit – communication accessible.

Légalement, vous n’avez peut-être pas de choix.

Equipez votre Organisation avec les formats nécessaires pour une communication accessible

La Loi concernant l’Accessibilité pour les Personnes souffrants d’un Handicap dans l’Ontario (LAPHO) reconnaît la discrimination qui a lieu à l’égard des personnes handicapées de l’Ontario et vise à mettre en œuvre et à faire respecter les normes pour assurer l’accessibilité pour des Ontariens handicapés. Cela comprend la fourniture des outils auditif nécessaires pour les personnes handicapées de manière à être en mesure d’assister et/ou de participer quand dans un espace de rassemblement.

Le Code International des Immeubles de 2012 stipule que: “Chaque zone de rassemblement où les communications Audio font partie intégrante de l’utilisation de l’espace, doivent avoir un système d’aide pour l’écoute”.

Une zone de rassemblement est définie comme correspondant à tout espace où les gens se rassemblent, que ce soit une salle de réunion, une salle de banquet ou une salle de classe.

Lorsque la LAPHO a été adoptée, son objectif était de faire de l’Ontario une Province plus accessible à toutes les personnes handicapées d’ici 2025. Dans le cadre de cette loi chaque toutes les organisations concernées seront tenues de fournir des formats de communication accessibles aux personnes handicapées sur demande.

Alors qu’est-ce que cela signifie pour votre entreprise?

Tout d’abord, vous devez déterminer à quelle date votre entreprise doit être conforme à LAPHO.

A ce jour, le Gouvernement de l’Ontario et l’Assemblée législative doivent déjà être conformes à LAPHO tout comme les organisations désignées du secteur public avec plus de 50 employés. Comme indiqué dans le tableau ci-dessus les organisations désignées du secteur public avec 1-49 employés seront les prochains qui devront mettre à jour leurs dispositions en matière d’accessibilité. Suivront enfin les organisations à buts non-lucratifs et les organisations privées.

Les Systèmes d’Ecoutes Assistées ou certains types d’appareils, aident à réduire le bruit de fond et compensent la distance de la source sonore. Ils sont d’une particulière aide pour les personnes ayant différents degrés de perte auditive une fois présent dans un espace de réunion, que ce soit une institution gouvernementale (Salle d’Audience) ou une salle de conférence d’une organisation.

Enfin, le ListenWiFi vous fournit les mêmes avantages que le système ListenRF mais est plus sûr et peut réceptionner plus de canaux.

Making Your Meeting Places Audibly Accessible

Is your company AODA Compliant?

Different real time communications technologies, (audio, video, content, and interactive whiteboarding), can be combined in unique ways to suit each collaborative situation. A collaborative session is like a spinning top made of varying amounts of each of these four technologies. The tops may be different shapes and sizes, each top suiting the needs of the participants in the collaborative meeting, but the point of the top is always the audio technology. If there is no audio, there is no real time collaboration session – the top will not spin.

Audio technology is often taken for granted. Even though it is the most fundamental of the conferencing technologies it often gets the least focus. Audio technology has been compromised ever since mobile phone technology has become ubiquitous and more prevalent than landlines. Why? Because a mobile phone call gets packed into an 8kbps call.

A digital music file compressed into 128 kpbs sounds pretty good, however, at 64 kbps the fidelity drops off significantly and a 32 kbps song is hardly worth listening to.  An 8kbps voice call, which people have become accustomed to, does not provide good audio quality.

Why do we put up with this inferior audio quality?  For the convenience that the mobile phone gives us.  We sacrifice a lot of audio quality for mobile convenience, but good audio in a conference call is fundamental. It is often the difference between communicating and not communicating.

You can get the right technology to make the audio portion of your conferencing better, so people can hear what is being said properly – better communication.

Hearing Impairment

listentech-theater_42Our world can be challenging for the hearing impaired. According to the Canadian Hearing Society, hearing loss is becoming more and more prevalent:

  • Nearly 1 out of every 4 adult Canadians reports having some hearing loss
  • Hearing loss is the third most prevalent chronic condition in older adults and the most widespread disability. Its prevalence rises with age – 46% of people aged 45 to 87 have hearing loss
  • Aging is the number one cause of hearing loss and the incidence of hearing loss is poised to climb dramatically as our population ages

You can get the right technology to make the audio portion of your meeting places better, so hearing impaired people can hear what is being said properly – accessible communication.

Legally, you don’t have a choice.

Equip your Organization with the Necessary Formats for Accessible Communication

The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) recognizes the history of discrimination against persons with disabilities in Ontario and aims to implement and enforce standards to achieve accessibility for Ontarians with disabilities. This includes providing tools necessary for persons with hearing disabilities to be able to attend and/or participate when in an assembly area.

The 2012 International Building Code states, “Each assembly area where audile communications are integral to the use of the space shall have an assistive listening system.”

An assembly area is defined as any space where people gather, whether it’s a boardroom, a banquet hall, or a classroom.

When the AODA was passed its goal was to make Ontario a more accessible province to all people with disabilities by 2025. As part of this act every obligated organization will be required to provide accessible formats of communication to persons with disabilities upon request.

So what does this mean for your company?

First, you must determine by what date your company must be AODA compliant.

At this point the Government of Ontario and the Legislative Assembly must already be AODA compliant as well as designated public sector organizations with 50+ employees. As stated in the table above designated public sector organizations with 1-49 employees will be the next group that must get up to date with their accessibility provisions and lastly private and non-profit organizations.

Assistive Listening Systems or Devices help to reduce background noise and compensate for distance from the sound source and are specifically of great value to persons of varying degrees of hearing loss when present in a space of assembly, be it a government institution (i.e. courtroom) or an organization’s conference room.

Lastly the ListenWiFi provides you with all the same benefits of the ListenRF system but it is more secure and can host more channels.

Having an Assistive Listening System may be the law but it is also the right thing to do. Make sure that anyone and everyone that comes to your assembly areas are given the opportunity to have the best experience possible.

Then why is “selling” a collaboration strategy internally so darn hard?

Collaboration = culture + process + technology

You can’t achieve collaboration without all three working together and often it’s hard to demonstrate to an organization that perhaps their culture or their process is not conducive to an effective collaboration strategy. This is a hard sell. Technology can always be bought or retrofitted. It’s the first two, culture and process, that can grind an organization to a halt when determining the right collaboration solution path.

Here are three of the biggest challenges we see every day in pitching collaboration solutions to a team or organization:

1. People often don’t understand the meaning of Collaboration.

Collaboration is often misunderstood. Collaboration is an intangible tool for extracting knowledge, resources and ideas of anyone and everyone inside and outside an organization. Collaboration should be used to tap into your pool of talent and use the ideas and resources that will make your organization fit for a market that is changing at Mach speed.

Idea: Kick start your collaboration strategy by gaining a common interpretation of collaboration within your organization. Allowing people to phone in for a meeting is not collaboration but applying an interactive whiteboard session to your next planning session is a step that people can embrace.

2. People can’t track and measure collaboration output or define metrics.

The ROI on Collaboration can be defined by three specific measures: Operational measures, Productivity measures and Strategic Measures. An operational measure includes decreasing traveling costs and decreasing costs associated with office space. Collaboration can be measured by an increase in Productivity such as improved decision making cycles and efficient project completion. Strategic measures are harder to quantify but they include enhancing customer satisfaction and loyalty. If the benefits of collaboration are properly measured a huge ROI can be realized.

3. People don’t know how to build or execute a Collaboration strategy.

Many ­­organizations embrace the idea of collaboration but often struggle to define the steps and actions to make it happen. They often lack a guide or thought leader with respect to how they should approach their collaboration strategy. Collaboration technology is often implemented without strategy and organizations never reap the benefits or ROI.

Idea: Create a Collaboration Roadmap using strategic planning methodologies. Many people jump into purchasing equipment before they think through a strategy. This is because it is easier to pitch a capital expense then tackle culture and process. Before investing in collaboration technology, map the needs and capabilities of the organization and assess the people receiving your messages.

Being more collaborative means knowing your weaknesses, openly communicating, being authentic to yourself and knowing your position on a team. To adopt a collaborative culture in an organization it must encourage authenticity, open and frequent communication, team based work, communication technology that is all interconnected and clear visions.
