Unlocking Seamless Communication: The Power of Interoperability for Video Conferencing
A common struggle for many organizations is that they require access to more than one meeting platform to accomplish their day-to-day operations. However, the majority of their spaces and technology are designed to fully support only one. Whether that’s Microsoft Teams, Zoom, or something else — when you need to access a second platform, the experience is less than ideal.
Team members often face frustrating technical limitations, reduced collaboration quality, and inefficient workflows when switching between different platforms, and many find themselves giving up on room systems entirely to join from a personal device such as a laptop or tablet.
However, there is a solution: Interoperability.
Check out this video to learn how interoperability can enhance your hybrid meeting experience:
Interoperability increases flexibility, return-on-investment (ROI) of your meeting rooms, and productivity in your workplace by enabling consistent and seamless communication, no matter where you connect from.
What Is Interoperability?
Interoperability refers to the ability for different video conferencing platforms and room systems to connect and function seamlessly. It acts like a universal translator, enabling accessible, high-quality meetings that connect multiple systems (for example, connecting to a Zoom meeting from a Microsoft Teams Room).
By enabling interoperability, you will increase flexibility in your devices and spaces, make it easier for users to communicate both internally and externally, and improve your team’s experience overall with standardized meeting practices, shorter meeting join times and a less frustrated IT team.
It also eliminates the need to spend large amounts on unnecessary meeting room updates or purchasing unneeded platform licenses.
Approaches to Interoperability
There are three main approaches to interoperability, each suited to different organizational needs and infrastructure:
1. Direct Guest Join – Simple, Web-Based Access
Direct Guest Join is an app based solution that enables your room system to join meetings on different platforms without requiring complex integrations. This method provides the room system with the capability to connect to the four major platforms—Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Webex, and Google Meet.
Meetings are hosted on the web, allowing you to join effortlessly from the room system. This method is perfect for organizations prioritizing accessibility and ease of use, however, some meeting features may be limited depending on the device’s capabilities.
Organizations that frequently collaborate with external partners or clients using various platforms will benefit from Direct Guest Join’s flexibility. While it may not provide the same full feature set you experience with native apps, it remains a simple way to ensure connectivity across multiple platforms.
2. Cloud Video Interoperability (CVI) – Enhanced Room Features for Teams & Google Meet
Cloud Video Interoperability (CVI) is designed primarily for organizations that rely on Microsoft Teams or Google Meet. This approach allows users to enable their meetings with additional video conferencing connectivity options. It is also a great way for organizations to increase ROI on room technology by enabling SIP based video systems with the ability to join Google Meet and Microsoft Teams meetings— while maintaining advanced meeting room features such as dual-screen functionality, high-quality audio and video, and better room system integrations.
CVI solutions may limit certain native app capabilities (such as PowerPoint Live in Microsoft Teams meetings), but ensure high quality audio and video enablement in your required meeting platform.
This approach is best suited for businesses that want to enhance the meeting experience by increasing flexibility, while maintaining a preference for Google Meet or Microsoft Teams for the majority of operations.
3. SIP to Web – The Most Feature-Rich Experience
For businesses seeking the most native experience across Zoom, Teams, Webex, Google Meet, and even Apple FaceTime, SIP to Web is the best option. This approach allows SIP-enabled room systems (such as Cisco and Poly) to connect directly to web-hosted meetings while still accessing platform-specific features.
With SIP to Web, users benefit from a seamless experience while platform-specific features remain intact.
This method is highly versatile and works well in hybrid environments where businesses leverage multiple collaboration tools and/or spend significant time in externally hosted meetings.
SIP to Web is particularly beneficial for organizations that already have a robust SIP infrastructure in place and want to optimize their interoperability strategy without sacrificing quality or functionality. SIP to Web enables a consistent user experience no matter the meeting platform, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, or Webex.
